寛大さを一言で言うと…"giving"

寛大を英語でいうと考えると、
まずは、”tolerance”なんて単語が思い浮かびました。
しかし、その英語訳を見てうなってしまいました。

それが一言、”giving"だったんです。

それは、AERA Englishの５月号の巻頭での
Will Smith へのインタビュー記事で見つけました。

「７つの贈り物」という映画に言及しながら、
これまでの人生の中で一番寛大な宝物は何か？
という問いかけにつながっています。

またその返答もしゃれています。
祖母からいろいろと聞かせてもらった物語だというのです。

物語にはいろいろな教訓が含まれています。
そのことに気づかなくても、その物語を知ることで、
その教訓を学んでいきます。

だから、物語るということは、Giving することになりますね。
”give"に対する単語として、"get"がありますが、
"getting"一言で、貪欲なんて意味合いも出せるかもしれませんね。

以下、そのインタビュー部分です。

Q:This movie is about "giving." What is the most precious
and generous gift that you have received in your life?
A: It is from my grandmother. Instead of trying to teach me
the truth through works, she had raised me with stories.
She would explain things through people's lives and
experiences. Though I didn't feel like I was learning about life,
there were always messages in those stories.
